Find a real way forward Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy + Psychoanalysis

If you have a driving curiosity to learn more about yourself, or you’re ready to slow down to explore your experiences, I can guide you in this important work.

We may be a good fit together if…

  • You have tried other types of therapy or practices that did not bring the personal growth you hoped for.
  • You have trouble finding the language to describe an experience that has made a significant impact on your life.
  • You struggle with depression, anxiety, or challenges that affect how you feel and your ability to connect with other people.
  • You are having difficulty integrating your experiences of COVID and shelter-in-place.
  • You feel disconnected from relationships with yourself and others.
  • You aren’t happy with your marriage, career, or other parts of your life.
  • You feel uncertain about a situation, such as moving forward with a relationship or growing your family.
  • Your real feelings don’t match what others see of you.
  • You’re not sure what you’re feeling but you know you don’t feel quite right.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

This more immediate style of therapy can help you solve pressing problems and issues while gaining deeper insight into your past. We will work together to help you better understand yourself, build self-curiosity, and make sense of your experiences.

We will meet 1-2 times per week, typically face to face (or screen to screen for virtual sessions). I encourage you to relax and be in therapy in as comfortable way as possible.
Sometimes it is not possible to meet more frequently, but the psychotherapy work with me remains deeply psychoanalytic. Sometimes people recline, and turn the camera off, like in psychoanalysis.

The initial phase of work will include feedback from me about what I think work together might look like. I will also consider feedback from you about what feels manageable (or imaginable) to undertake.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is an intensive psychotherapy treatment where we meet multiple times per week. We slow things down as we try to get out of black and white thinking and premature knowing. This work takes time and has a mystery to it. No two analysis are the same. In your analysis, we get to consider your situation, without rushing, and without worksheets. This might seem counter-intuitive in our manic world, but the kind of psychic growth we are looking for will not be rushed.

We attend not only to your conscious thoughts but also to your unconscious, with its incredible potential to help you get to know yourself more deeply, including understanding more about what brought you here in the first place. You may find you become more curious not only about yourself, but about other people – what makes them tick, what they’re all about. You may begin to journal and record your dreams, and bring it all back into the analysis, where there is the time and support to think through what is coming up for you.

If we are meeting in person, you are encouraged to recline in a chaise. I will be seated just behind you, close by but not directly in sight. This arrangement can facilitate freedom of thought and expression. It is not required – you can sit across from me if that feels better for you, but I do find the original psychoanalytic seating arrangement to have tremendous benefit. The increased frequency and consistency of meetings along with the seating arrangement is to encourage you to settle in with yourself, your mind, and with me, and to freely explore your thoughts, feelings, and dreams.

If we are meeting virtually I will encourage you to go ahead and recline, with me on the phone or video next to you, after an initial video check-in.

Professional Consultation

I provide consultation to mental health professionals, with a special interest in helping clinicians find their own voices as therapists. No two therapists are the same, and we should not all feel like we need to sound and be like someone we are not. The truer we are to ourselves, and to our own unique, quirky, voices, the easier it is to develop our curiosity and deepen the work. It is more pleasurable.

I am available for short or long-term ongoing consultation (weekly) or, in some situations, I can be available in a more ad hoc fashion.
